The Columbus Monument and Lucayan Memorial, Long Island, Bahamas
Blog Post - November 7, 2025
The Columbus Monument and Lucayan Memorial is located on the north end of Long Island in the Bahamas.
It has a beautiful beach, turquoise water, great snorkeling, white cliffs, and sandbars.
Below is a map showing the location at the very north end of Long Island.
As we pulled up, we found a large free paved parking lot.
There is a paved trail that takes you up to the monument. As you are going up there is a beautiful beach on the right hand side.
We took the stairs up to the monument and memorial. There is the main observation deck with the memorial and there is a 2nd observation deck with benches.
We walked up the stairs and went to the left first to go to the Columbus Monument and Lucayan Memorial.
We finally made it to the top and found a large viewing area with benches and the Columbus Monument and Lucayan Memorial. The memorial says "This monument is dedicated to the gentle, peaceful, and happy aboriginal people of Long Island, The Lucayans and to the arrival of Christopher Columbus on 17th, October, 1492."
After enjoying the views, we walked down the stairs and over to the second observation area. As you walk up those stairs you have amazing views of the beach and turquoise water. At the top, we found another viewing area with benches.
Next, we headed all the way back down to go to the beach. When we got to the bottom, we saw a trail that goes over to the beach. This was a beautiful beach with crystal clear turquoise water.
We brought our own snorkeling gear and got into the water to start snorkeling. We saw all sorts of fish. The day that we went there was a strong current so we didn't go around the rocks, but we still saw a lot of marine life.
After snorkeling, we got out and laid out on the beach. In the distance we could see some amazing sandbars. Next time we are definitely going to bring a kayak or paddle boards to go out there and explore. I flew my drone out to explore and this is what it looks like.
Overall, we had an amazing time at the Columbus Monument and the Lucayan Memorial. We loved hiking to the top and taking in the views. We also loved the beach and snorkeling here. We definitely want to come back with some paddle boards or a kayak to go out and explore the sandbars. We highly recommend this on your next trip to Long Island, Bahamas.
